Hello
Parents/Guardians!
W.O.W (Words of the Week)
Words:
- who
- new
- must
- black

Weekly Highlights:
- This week we readjusted to being
back at school. We reviewed and practiced classroom routines and
rules. We are doing a great job of remembering to complete our
morning jobs!
- This week in Literacy we learned
all about how to make lists. We watched a story called Wallace’s
Lists. In the story the character, Wallace, made lists for
everything he did.
- In Science we are learning about
seasonal changes that occur in the winter. We watched videos and
read books all about the many things people do in the winter and learned
about what happens in nature. We learned that the season of winter
is different in different parts of the world. Some places are rainy and others are
snowy.
- We started creating winter people
this week to put on our seasons board in the hallway. We wrote about
an activity that we like to do in the winter. We were reminded to
include juicy words (adjectives)
when writing about our activity and to include why we enjoy doing
it. For example, “I like snowboarding because I can zoom down the
slippery hill really fast.”
- When writing we practiced using
finger spaces, periods, starting sentences with an uppercase letter, using
juicy words, and reading our work to make sure that it makes sense.
- While reading poetry this week we
practiced pausing at commas and stopping at periods, exclamation marks,
and question marks.

Simons Valley
Reads/Mathletes:
We are excited to bring
back two programs, Simons Valley Reads
and Simons Valley
Mathletes. Both programs were a HUGE success because of volunteers such as
you! We are hoping to run an 8 week program of both SVS Reads and
Mathletes starting January 28th for 1 hour a week.
Here is a brief description
of the two programs (little different from last year) but just as impactful!
SVS Reads
To support our Grade One/
Two/ Three students, we are looking for parent
volunteers who would be
able to come once a week for an
hour and work with two
students. Volunteers would work with a student for 20 minutes each practicing
high frequency words, sentence work and of course, reading a short story. All
of the materials will be provided for you!
SVS Mathletes
The second program, Simons
Valley Mathletes is a program designed to
help our grade 3 to 6
students develop proficiency in mathematics. The focus this year will be to
strengthen basic math facts. With this program, as SVS Reads, we are looking
for parent volunteers who would be able to come once a week for an hour and
work with two students. Volunteers would work with each student for 20 minutes
making numbers, practicing basic math facts and then playing a math game. All
of the materials will be provided for you.
If you are interested in
volunteering with either program, please contact us at ggdavidoff@cbe.ab.ca or bghordern@cbe.ab.ca before January 14th.
