Weekly Highlights:
- This week we continued to learn
about 2D shapes. We practiced identifying how objects are different
and the same in order to sort them into different groups. We sorted
using a variety of attributes such as: shape, size, design, number of sides,
number of corners, etc. We practiced naming a variety of shapes and looked
at how 2D shapes can be put together to create different pictures.
We enjoyed working with the tangram shapes and geoboards and be using
these again next week.
- In Science we learned about what
animals do in the winter. We learned about the 3 ways that they
survive the winter: adapt, hibernate, and migrate. We watched
videos, read books, and discussed our own experiences with animals in the
winter. We created 2 visual journal pages to demonstrate what we
have learned.
- We finished our winter people for
our hallway bulletin board and have put them up. They are looking
great!
- We continued to practice fluent
reading this week while reading poems in our song & poem
books.
- We ended the week with a fun
winter art project. We created ourselves using paper pretending to
catch snowflakes on our tongues. We will finish these on Monday.
- Due to the bitter cold this week
we spent all week inside. We enjoyed some free time building,
colouring, and reading. We are
looking forward to getting back outside next week!

Simons Valley
Reads/Mathletes:
We are excited to bring
back two programs, Simons Valley Reads
and Simons Valley
Mathletes. Both programs were a HUGE success because of volunteers such as
you! We are hoping to run an 8 week program of both SVS Reads and
Mathletes starting January 28th for 1 hour a week.
Here is a brief description
of the two programs (little different from last year) but just as impactful!
SVS Reads
To support our Grade One/
Two/ Three students, we are looking for parent
volunteers who would be
able to come once a week for an
hour and work with two
students. Volunteers would work with a student for 20 minutes each practicing
high frequency words, sentence work and of course, reading a short story. All
of the materials will be provided for you!
SVS Mathletes
The second program, Simons
Valley Mathletes is a program designed to
help our grade 3 to 6
students develop proficiency in mathematics. The focus this year will be to
strengthen basic math facts. With this program, as SVS Reads, we are looking
for parent volunteers who would be able to come once a week for an hour and
work with two students. Volunteers would work with each student for 20 minutes
making numbers, practicing basic math facts and then playing a math game. All
of the materials will be provided for you.
If you are interested in
volunteering with either program, please contact us at ggdavidoff@cbe.ab.ca or bghordern@cbe.ab.ca before January 14th.
